Through my experience in universities and art academies both as a student and a teacher, I recognise the need for concrete support in writing texts that abide by scholarly standards along lines of syntax, grammar, style guide formatting (footnotes, bibliography, citations, orthography, punctuation) as well as assistance with making one’s arguments clear, consistent, and convincing, delivering a text that reads fluently, without repetitions, with the necessary references, highlighting the central thesis and novelty of the thesis/diseretation.
As a first-generation university student, I know how complex it can be to navigate an environment with many unwritten rules and customs, many of them reflected in the expressive manner and conventions of writing, especially if English isn’t one’s first language. As a freelancer, I have copy-edited several PhD dissertations in the arts and humanities, and I am well-versed in the demands and expectations of the format. I have a C2 (with A) from Cambridge (2006), and have worked in English for the past 16 years. I have a Master’s in Queer Studies in Arts & Culture from Birmingham City University (UK), and a PhD from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (AT). My dissertation was published by transcript.
As someone who has published her work in academic journals, magazines, books, collective volumes, and has co-edited a journal’s special issue, as well as acted as a reviewer for monographs and journal articles, I am familiar with the tasks needed for a project to be print-ready and the many things that often only an external eye can spot.

Proofreading includes: Grammar, syntax, punctuation, pagination, citations, footnotes, bibliography.
Copy editing includes: Suggestions or edits for clarity, style, reorganising/restructuring text, creating an index, creating a table of contents, formatting tables, illustrations, and their captions.
Accessibility/sensitivity reading includes: Making sure the work doesn’t accidentally include anachronistic, pejorative, inaccurate or otherwise insensitive language and expressing yourself and your ideas in a contemporary, socially-aware manner that takes into account imbalances along lines of race, gender, sexuality, class, origin, religion, and ability. Making sure the font and design don’t obstruct the legibility and comprehension of the text and adapting to make it more accessible. This includes offering explanations for jargon, abbreviations, or foreign terms, descriptive text for links and alt text images/illustrations to be compatible with text-to-voice readers, and contrast and spacing. This is important for publications or websites whose design you can intervene in, as academic publications often have a preset layout which they do not deviate from.
